Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

What happens if you're not sure that you want to be the primary parent anymore?

If you’re a regular listener you’ll know that I often do “Ask Julia” style episodes, where I try to offer some advice on a particular single mum issue. Recently I got asked this really interesting question... She wrote...

Hi Julia!

I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your podcast and listening each week. I was wondering if you could do a podcast on single mothers who give up primary custody of their children and the reasons as to why they do it?

I know your podcast is all about empowering single mums to thrive and not just survive but lately, I've been massively struggling with my daughter and have often thought about giving up primary custody for many reasons. I haven't found a lot of support in this area or people I can talk to about being able to change my perspective. I'd love to hear your thoughts or expert advice on single mums who have given up primary custody and how they cope now as the secondary parent or mums who've thought about it but changed their minds and whether they have Mum guilt or feel they made the wrong decision?

Thank you!

I hope to hear back from you (:

Elisabeth Shaw, CEO of the NSW chapter of Relationships Australia is on the show with me this week to chat about this issue.

Elisabeth shares her insights on

  • Reasons why people may not want to be the primary parent anymore.
  • The stereotypical belief that as women we think we have to be the primary parent.
  • What may be the wrong reasons for wanting this change.
  • Getting support.
  • Potential impacts of this change on a young child.
  • So much more!

Elisabeth is the CEO of Relationships NSW. She is a clinical and counseling psychologist with extensive experience in child protection, drug and alcohol, sexual assault, women’s health, disability, and general counseling services. She has also taught in Masters programs at ACU, UNSW and Newcastle universities in areas including clinical practice, and management and professional ethics, and she routinely presents and publishes work in these areas.

Amy Molloy sure knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity and getting through challenging times. As a teenager Amy suffered from anorexia, she became a 23-year-old widow, her second marriage ended in divorce, there is a family history of depression, and her father was paralysed with cancer…

Now, Amy is married to her third husband and she has two beautiful children. In her latest book, The World Is A Nice Place, Amy writes about how to overcome adversity, joyfully.

In this episode, Amy shares:

  • How she dealt with the death of her husband, grief and moving on after the death of a loved one.
  • How she got past the guilt of moving on and into her next relationship and not letting the relationship with her late husband be brought into the next relationship.
  • The importance of self-compassion.
  • The labels we put on ourselves from our past and whether they are our own opinions of ourselves or the (possibly past) opinions of others, and how they can limit us and impact us in the present and moving into the future.
  • The benefits of storytelling for healing.
  • Perfectionism and how to challenge your inner critic and self-talk.
  • Her experience with past life regression and childhood regression therapy.

Has someone ever said anything to you that you haven't been able to drop easily or forget? Something that really hurt your feelings? Perhaps an ex-telling you something that really stings? Or perhaps you remember very clearly a small negative childhood memory which overpowers lots of positive ones?

In this solo episode, Julia talks about negative versus positive comments, feedback, memories, and experiences and why generally, according to research, the negative ones have a much bigger impact on us.

Tanya Savva is a remarkable woman. She lives a life that is harder than a lot of single mothers, but it is also a very happy and rewarding life.

She has sacrificed a lot but something that I felt after speaking with Tanya is the confidence and self-awareness that she exudes. Tanya knows her purpose. And there is something incredibly empowering about that.

Tanya's nine-year-old daughter was born blind, autistic, developmentally delayed and fighting for her life. Tanya was told that she would never walk or be able to care for herself. She relies on medication in order to survive.

Tanya's relationship with her daughter's father did not survive, and just before their daughter's first birthday, it was over. Tanya found herself relocating back to Australia from New Zealand and moving back in with her parents.

In this episode, Tanya tells her single mother story.

We discuss the 6-month road trip up the east coast of Australia that Tanya did alone with her daughter and how that resulted in Tanya pursuing her passions to become an author, wellness & life coach and yoga teacher.

We also discuss how she has managed to parent her special needs child solo, how the co-parenting relationship has evolved over the last eight years and how they have dealt with living in different countries, self-fulfillment and how that helps us be better parents, and so much more.

  • How to remain calm and not respond to an ex trying to upset you, and not allowing his behaviour or actions affect you.
  • If shared parenting gets easier and how to manage an ex who plays games and seems to have no interest in a child's physical and mental well-being.
  • How to handle a brand new break-up - from feeling devastated for the kids, managing grief, feeling lost, finding support, and strategies to move forward. Plus what to do if he is moving in with another woman immediately.

Ashlene Marshall was fast asleep when her husband woke her up and told her he had something to say. He told her he was done. They had been together for ten years and had a 21 week old and a 2 year old. There were no prior to signs that there was anything wrong in the relationship, or that he was unhappy.

In this episode, Ashlene shares her single mum story.

She also discusses ten signs of men who suddenly abandon their wives (according to Vikki Stark), the impact the abandonment has had on her life, her discovery of the other woman, challenges she’s come across, and how she has coped. Plus so much more.

As raw and heartbreaking this story is, ultimately it’s a story of courage, and inspiration.

In this week's episode, I chat with Zoe Hendrix from Australia’s very first season of Married at First Sight. Australia watched with anticipation as she married Alex and their love story continued on for four years after the show. In November 2016 their beautiful daughter Harper Rose was born, and then six months ago, in April 2018, they separated.

Zoe is now a single mum and she’s on the show this week to share some of her story and to have a bit of a chat about single mum life.

We chat about the shame of becoming a single mum, allowing yourself to feel the grief and heartache of a break-up, treating yourself like you do your child, how life changed as a single mum, setting free the "perfect life plan", strategies to rise from rock bottom, how connecting with other single mums can change your life, the stigma of single mums (and how amazing we really are!), dating as a single mum, and how doing things for ourselves does NOT make us bad mums.

We also chat about overcompensating as a single mum, how Zoe's daughter coped with the separation and the resilience of children, how appearances can be deceiving, co-parenting challenges, and SO MUCH MORE!

Zoe also shares the benefits she's found being a single mum and her advice for new single mums.

This was such a great conversation, and Zoe's attitude is so inspiring. A must listen!
