Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

In this week's episode, Julia chats with Michele Chevalley Hedge - nutritionist, and creator and author of The Healthy Hormone Diet

Michele tells us how hormones affect our weight, mood, and energy and how important those things are for single mums.

She also answers the following questions:

  • What happens if hormones are unbalanced?
  • Can we get hormone levels tested?
  • How do we know when our hormones are in sync?
  • What do hormones (cortisol, insulin, thyroid, serotonin, testosterone, leptin, oestrogen) do and how do they affect us and what affects them?
  • Where are hidden sugars, and how do we know how much hidden sugar we are consuming?
  • Is it OK to drink a glass of wine every now and then? Spoiler alert - yes! In fact, it's essential.

About Michele:

She is often introduced by health magazine editors as “the modern-day nutritionist – the one who likes a bit of wine and coffee.”  She is not about everything being completely paleo or having zero sugar, but she’s placed somewhere in the healthy middle.

Every week, Michele works with major banks and corporations in Australia such as Westpac, CBA, ANZ, HSBC, Apple, Dropbox, Westfield, the Department of Defence, and schools and education events.  Michele is a sought-after presenter because she is authentic and connects to people who desire knowledge, but not in an overwhelming jargon-filled way or with a fad diet.

Michele is also an ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and for the launch of THAT SUGAR FILM.

Along with her own blog and social media, Michele writes for Body & Soul, Huffington Post, Mamamia, The Glow, Prevention, Wellbeing, Clean, Cosmo, MindFood and many more.  Michele’s first book, Beating Sugar for Dummies was published in 2013 and her current book, a #1 bestseller, The Healthy Hormone Diet, was released a few months ago.

Michele also often appears on Sunrise to discuss the World Health Organisation’s recommendations on nutrition, cancer, and sugar.

Michele has several degrees and a diploma of Nutritional Medicine and is a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society.

Michele is an educator, a storyteller, and a passionate researcher.

In this episode, Julia talks with single mum, columnist, social commentator and author of new book Out There: A survival guide for dating in midlife, Kerri Sackville.

Five years ago Kerri's marriage of 17 years ended. When she started dating again she made every mistake known to womankind. She swiped right on scammers and fakers, spent weeks fruitlessly texting, agreed to long dates with the wrong men, and got involved with hot messes and commitment-phobes.

She also met amazing men and went on sensational first dates, and learned how to navigate the minefield that is dating in midlife. In her new book, she shares all her wisdom with us.

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, we chat about the book and I pick Kerri's brain on dating in midlife. We discuss what it felt like for Kerri to put herself out there in the dating world after a 17-year relationship, how she knew when she was ready, the red flags we should ALL be aware of, her dating guidelines, why dating is not always the solution, and so much more. We also discuss her own journey in becoming a single mother, what she loves about being a single mum, and her advice for other single mums.

Kerri writes regularly for Sunday Life, SMH Online, and news.com.au on topics ranging from sex and relationships to parenting, mental health, and current affairs. She also makes regular appearances on television and radio. Along with her new book, she is also the author of two other books: When My Husband Does The Dishes... (2011) and The Little Book Of Anxiety - Confessions from A Worried Life (2012).

This episode is a MUST listen for anyone dating or considering dating in the future!

This is Part 2 of a two-part episode with one of the bravest and most beautiful women I've had the opportunity to speak with on the show.

In Part 1, my guest told her horrific story of her experience in the 10-year relationship she had with the father of her children.

Since then, she has rebuilt her life from the ground up. It has not been an easy road. But she is strong, and she is beautifully brave. She is a survivor.

In this episode, her story continues. She tells us about the sentencing of her ex-partner because of what he did to her. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison for a lengthy list of charges including torture, deprivation of liberty, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.

She also shares what has happened since then and offers her advice for women going through something similar. We discuss the following.

  • What life was like in a refuge.
  • The organizations that helped her.
  • How she helped her kids whilst going through her own recovery.
  • How she rebuilt her life.
  • Precautions that she has put in place to keep her and her children safe from the perpetrator.
