Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

Nov 28, 2017

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia chats with single mum Angela Hadchiti.

The 25th of November was White Ribbon Day - the International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The message is loud and clear - stand up, speak out, and act! And that is exactly what this week's guest, Angela, has done and continues to do. She is a domestic violence survivor, and thriver.

Her story is one of horror, and one that no one should have to go through. Angela endured 19 years of physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse from her husband. Five Apprehended Violence Orders were taken out on her husband throughout her marriage. Her husband abused her so badly that Angela received multiple injuries (including a broken neck) which led to hospitalisation.  Angela received death threats, and her children were even told in graphic detail how he planned to carry that out.

Angela was one of the "lucky" ones. She didn't die. She is here to tell her story. And despite the horror and unimaginable events that she and her three daughters had to endure, Angela has come out stronger than she has ever been. Furthermore, she has used her experience to help other victims of domestic violence.

One of the hardest things she and her eldest daughter had to do (due to a major loophole that existed) was to go to Court and be subject to cross examination by the alleged perpetrator who was representing himself. This led Angela to wanting change. She didn't want anyone else to have to go through what her daughter and herself had to go through. And so a petition begun. Angela has had almost 20,000 people sign the petition which helped bring the matter to the surface. Steps have since been made to make changes to the legislation - The Family Law Amendment (Family Violence and Cross‑examination of Parties) Bill 2017 - which would see a court-appointed representative ask questions on behalf of the alleged perpetrator.

Angela is one strong, brave, and incredibly remarkable woman. This is her story.

Nov 21, 2017

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia chats with single mum Kate Mather and single dad Michael Hayes.

Raising three children (two of them boys) as a single mum, Kate worried about being able to provide "manly" opportunities to her sons, and so who better to team up with than single dad and outdoor expedition adventurer Michael Hayes?

Michael has been conducting outdoor adventure programs with corporates, professional sporting teams and family groups for the last 20 years. He has a Bachelor of Exercise Science, a diploma of Outdoor Recreation, and he is a Former QLD and NSW Rugby Union player. He has also worked with CEO of The Making Of Men, Arne Rubinstein, in his leadership training programs.

Together, Kate and Michael decided to create a program called a ‘Rite of Passage’ for boys. It is specifically for boys that may not have a male figure present in their life and it is an opportunity to have a weekend of male bonding and growth whilst seeking to find respect in others and manage those core responses to situations as they develop throughout these transitional years.

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, I chat with single mum Rosemary. It's an incredible story of courage.

We talk about Rosemary's story of becoming a single mum - the hurdles that she crossed in deciding to end the relationship, and how she came to the decision that leaving was the best option for her and her daughter. We also talk about how she found her feet and redefined herself and her expectations of future relationships, what the whole experience taught her daughter and teaching her daughter to make decisions that empower her through role modeling those actions herself, the stigma that it's better for kids if their parents are together, and the benefits and challenges she has come across in becoming a single parent.

This is a really amazing and insightful discussion and one of my favourite conversations to date.

In Part 2 of this two part episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia talks with Lara Flanagan. Lara is a true inspiration. She is the single mum who has been travelling the world with her kids on just $100 a day. At age 41, Lara Flanagan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was told she was destined to a life in a wheelchair. After struggling to accept the news she eventually took control of her condition to embrace the best life has to offer.

Selling everything she owned, since last year, she and her 9 year old twins have been setting out on the ultimate adventure around the globe all while inspiring others with her message of hope.

In her own words, she is also a photo taking, food obsessed, foul mouthed, constantly writing and country-loving Mamma. And her Blog - My Notes from New England is where she shares her stories. She is on the constant hunt for taste, colour, flavour and love with lashings of food for the soul.

Her blog covers everything from dealing with life in the country as a single mum city-chic to being diagnosed with MS to travelling the world with twins, armed only with a laptop and her camera. It’s also about her love of vegan food and the life she shares with her twins and her two mad dogs.  It covers the good, the bad, the funny, the sad and the downright fucking ugly.

In this episode (Part 2) we talk about how her diagnosis with MS motivated her to live life to the fullest and travel the world for 9 months with her 8 year old twins. We talk about where they went and the experiences they had, how she financed it prior to leaving, how she budgeted the expenses overseas, what traveling taught her children, how they were schooled. We also talk about her blog - My Notes from New England, the best things about being a single mum, her advice for new single mums and lots lots more!

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia talks with Leanne Mulcahy. Leanne found herself unexpectedly pregnant at 18 and when her relationship didn’t work out, she became a single mum when her daughter was 6 months old. She has since created an amazing life for herself. She is an award-winning designer and Founder of Stand Out Women, which is a global community for women who are ready to live life on their own terms. She’s also a speaker and an author.

Her first book Notes to Self was released in 2015 and was a hit with women who connected with her story of overcoming severe shyness and lack of self-worth to have a business where she helps women have the life they really want. An updated version of this book - Imperfectly Perfect - has since been released.

Leanne also works with women to design a clear vision and plan that helps them overcome mindset blocks that keep them stuck, boost their confidence so they can stop worrying and doubting themselves and feel good about taking deliberate and inspired action.

Her online radio show, Stand Out Radio, is where women from around the world share inspirational stories, wisdom and answer the burning question "what does it mean to live life on your own terms".

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Leanne tells us about her own journey of becoming a single mum, and what it was like being such a young single mum and how she coped. She also discusses the benefits she encountered in being a single mum, and what it has taught her daughter. She also shares what life looks like for her today, her advice for single mums, and what she’s learnt through her experience of being a single mum.
