Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

This week on the show, I have a single mum, Julia, sharing her story.

Julia has been a single mum since 2018 and is a part of my Thrive Tribe community.

When Julia met her partner, their relationship progressed quite quickly and they soon moved in together. In 2013, she gave birth to their first baby which was the beginning of a spiral of trauma for Julia. Julia also suffered from PND after the  birth, which was when her partner's narcissistic tendencies started showing up.

Julia and her partner were married shortly before their second son was born a few years later.

Gradually over the years, Julia's husband started showing some strange behavior. He lied, he was very deceptive, and he had trouble sleeping. He was also starting to get involved in violent situations with strangers.

Concerned about these things, his mood swings and paranoia, and because he was starting to get sores all over his body, Julia spoke to a doctor.

Not long after, Julia's husband confessed to her that he was a drug addict. Julia tried to support him but eventually she told him to leave while he sobered up after he had a psychotic episode and hit her.

In 2018, Julia took their kids on a holiday, and when they returned, he had emptied the house of his belongings and moved to Queensland.

In this episode, Julia also talks about:

  • What has happened since then.
  • The court proceedings and her ex's arrangement with the kids now.
  • The good things that have come out of the separation and her experience and how she has loved working on herself and being a member of Thrive Tribe.
  • The importance of having a well.
  • Her favourite things about becoming a single mum.
  • And SO MUCH MORE!

Julia has been through a lot and is a true inspiration, and I think you will love this episode!

In this episode, I touch base with an anonymous guest I chatted with in 2020 where she shared her experience of living with sexual abuse over a two part episode series.

At the time, she had been a single mum for two and a half years. and had two daughters, aged two and four.

In Part 1, episode 191, my guest shared her experience with domestic violence, and specifically the sexual abuse she received from her partner of over 10 years. She left him when she was 8 months pregnant with her second daughter.

She also shared how her experience led to her interest and research into psychology and neurology, the support she received from Lifeline and 1800 Respect, and how she learned about domestic violence and came to the realisation that she herself was in an abusive relationship.

In Part 2, episode 192, she continued her story. Along with sharing how her relationship came to an end, she also talked about:

  • How she hung onto the relationship in the hope that he would change.
  • The suicide threats she received during their relationship.
  • The fear that she had of the repercussions of taking out an AVO against her partner, and constantly worrying about how he would react about things.
  • The support that she received from her family support worker as well as from the brother (and his wife) of her (ex) partner.
  • Dealing with her experience living in a small town, and how domestic violence was such a foreign concept for her immediate community.
  • The worry that she had about her kids.
  • And so much more!

In this episode, Part 3, my guest fills us in on what she has been up to over the last year and the tremendous growth that she has had coming out the other side of her experience and the happiness that she now feels.
