Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

Are you worried about your child (or children) having anxiety? Not sure how to help them?

In this episode, I chat with the lovely Deb Hopper. As a practicing Occupational Therapist, Deb Hopper has over 20 years of experience working with children and adults who struggle with autism, anxiety, emotional regulation, and sensory processing difficulties.

Deb chats with me in this episode about:

  • what anxiety is and how to recognize signs that you or your children have it,
  • how life can be improved without anxiety,
  • how to recognize the difference between what is normal behavior for children and what may be an indicator for anxiety,
  • the four anchors of reducing anxiety,
  • and so much more!

Deb enjoys working in her private practice and supervises and mentors Occupational Therapists. She loves to create resources, online courses, and books for adults and children and is the author of the book Teaching Kids to Manage Anxiety: Superstar Practical Strategies. For many of us single mums, Mother’s Day can be a harder day than most. Particularly if you have come from a situation where you were previously pampered and spoilt on Mother’s Day by your partner at the time, or if it’s your first Mother’s Day as a single mum. It can be a reminder as to what has been lost.

If you’re feeling vulnerable this Mother’s Day, here are some tips to ease the struggle.

This week on the show, I have Liz joining me. For 25 years, Liz was married to a gambling addict.

In hindsight, the first red flag was when her ex never paid her back for her engagement ring. He had told her he wasn't good with money and had spent the money intended for the ring.

One day Liz went to buy groceries from the joint spending account and all the money was gone. Over time, her ex finally admitted to having a gambling problem.

When Liz was in hospital having their first baby, her ex completely drained her bank accounts. The same thing happened when she was in hospital having their second baby.

Not wanting anyone thinking badly of him, she kept the secret to herself and spent years covering for him and paying people back that he owed money to.

Over the years, things went from bad to worse, and he even started gaslighting her, which resulted in Liz thinking she was imagining things. They experienced breaking up and getting back together, gambling counselling and rehab attempts, holidays where he disappeared gambling the entire time, suicide attempts and threats, and so much more. Liz shares how her ex even stole money from their daughters.

This is a sad story, but ultimately one of hope, inspiration, and empowerment. Liz finds the strength to leave her husband and her toxic marriage for good and starts the new chapter of her life.

In this episode, Liz shares Part 2 of her story (check out last week's episode, Episode 244, where she shares Part 1).

When my daughter was younger, every time she was with her father, I would worry that my ex may not bring her back. It’s a feeling I hope most won’t ever know. But for a small percentage of us, the possibility is real.

During those times, I would go through a period of a few dark, dark days. And even though I’ve spent years working on my mindset, sometimes the darkness was still hard to shake.

If you can relate to that fear, then you are not alone. In this episode, I share ten strategies that used to help me. I hope that by sharing some strategies that worked for me, perhaps you will find some that will work for you too.

Co-parenting. It’s a word that can evoke enough anxiety in someone to induce a panic attack. Or maybe it’s so smooth sailing, it doesn’t bring you a worry in the world.

Love it or hate it, it’s sure to be a conversation starter at any single mums group.

In this episode, I give you a summary of three common co-parenting styles.

This week, Kellie Moses joins me on the show.

Considered a healer for all, Kellie helps women and children who have lived through grief, trauma and heartache to shed and let go of the residual negative emotion and energy that is in their bodies.

She has worked with women who have experienced sexual, physical, emotional and verbal abuse and have helped them to shift the trauma, energy and subconscious beliefs and bring them back into landing safely in their bodies, minds, souls and hearts. She works with women to process and navigate inner child work, taking them back to painful, traumatic experiences and guiding them to sit, receive, open up and communicate with their own inner child.

Kellie specialises in working with mothers and women who seek direction for clearing their limiting beliefs attributed to negative emotions. By helping her clients rediscover a new sense of peace, alignment and self-love, they are able to reconnect to their true selves, carving out some time to process and transmute any negative emotion that is trapped in their auric, energetic or emotional field.

Kellie helps guide her clients to explore their subconscious narratives and emotions towards a new narrative and abundant reality and to break the patterns they are running and that are being passed on through family lineage.

In this episode, Kellie shares her experience of becoming a single mum. She talks about the financial struggles and panic attacks that came with it, her co-parenting relationship and arrangement, and how motherhood changed her priorities and led her to a complete career overhaul from teacher to energy healer.

We also talk about her son's first day of pre-school, and the emotions that came with that, the lack of support that exists when women miscarry, and her connection to her inner self and her spirituality and how that evolved from when she was a child.

In addition, Kellie runs us through what the seven Chakras are and why it's important that they are clear, how a "person clearing", "womb clearing", and "spiralling" can help us, and getting back into our feminine energy.

Finally, she runs us through her advice for new single mums!

Six years ago, Lisa moved to Australia from Germany. Last year she found out she was pregnant in the middle of a motorbike trip from Sydney to Byron Bay. She had unexpectedly fallen pregnant with a man she had just started dating.

All her pre-conceived ideas of how life and family "should" look like, especially when having a baby, were challenged and her journey of thinking about what she should do, and how it should look like had begun.

In this episode, Lisa shares her story. She also talks about how the father of the baby reacted when she told him the news, what her decision process with what to do looked like, and what her co-parenting plan is when not knowing the father of the baby that well. Lisa also gives her advice to women who have also unexpectedly fallen pregnant with someone they've just started dating and who intend on becoming single mothers.

Dec 29, 2020

In this episode, I have Marie, a single mum and member of my Thrive Tribe community joining me.

Marie met her husband when they were both working in the British Royal Navy. They served on the same ship together for over five years at which point they decided she would leave so they could get married and have children.

After they got married and had a child, their marriage started to present cracks, and Marie agreed to immigrate to Australia with her husband in the hope that things would get better for their relationship.

Marie found herself, mostly alone, in a foreign country, with a toddler and a new baby and suffering with Post Natal Depression.

At the same time, her relationship with her husband got worse and the emotional abuse she was receiving increased.

They moved across the country to be closer to her (then) husband's parents and things only got worse. Her husband and his family were incredibly unsupportive of her joining the Police Force Academy to fulfil her dream of joining the Police Force. To make matters worse, Marie then suffered a stroke.

Before long she realised she had completely lost herself.

In this episode, Marie shares her story. She talks about:

  • what it was like being a female in the British Royal Navy,
  • leaving the navy and the shift in dynamics in the relationship,
  • immigrating to Australia and becoming a new mum,
  • being diagnosed with PND,
  • dealing with emotional abuse from her (now) ex-husband,
  • relocating to Western Australia,
  • losing herself,
  • having a stroke and recovering,
  • dealing with her intrusive in-laws,
  • the moment she was on the train and realised she wanted to leave her husband,
  • discovering that her husband was a narcissist,
  • separating from her subsequent partner,
  • how Thrive Tribe has helped her and given her the nudge she needed,
  • how she has started turning her life around,
  • and so much more.

Today, Marie is a single mum, she has a positive go-getter attitude, she is a full-time police officer, she is starting to get back to being her, and is working on improving things every day. I'm incredibly proud of Marie; she is a true inspiration!
