Single Mother Survival Guide

Becoming a single mum is one of the most daunting and overwhelming life changes someone will ever go through. Whether you are pregnant or have teenagers, you will most likely be confused and struggling with what to do next. I became a single mother in 2013 when my daughter was just a few months old, and it has been a challenging but rewarding journey ever since. This Podcast (and the website www.singlemothersurvivalguide.com) was created to assist newly single mothers in all things they may need to know about. SO WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOTHER SURVIVAL GUIDE PODCAST ABOUT? A Podcast for single mums, made by a single mum… The Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast includes a mixture of me babbling about single mums business, and interviews and discussions with different people and experts about different topics. First off the ranks this includes an interview with a Wills and Estate lawyer which contains everything YOU need to know about getting a Will done, an interview with a financial adviser on everyday money management, savings, spending and so forth, an interview with an online security expert so that YOU know how to keep yourself secure online, an open interview with a domestic violence survivor and advocate, and another interview with a financial adviser on everything to do with insurance, and what you should think about getting insured to ensure the financial safety for you and your kids. Coming up after that I have chats with people including parenting experts, family lawyers, and a life coach. I also chat about the social stigma of being a single mum, single parent travel, everyday tips to make YOUR life easier, dating, personal budgeting, resources out there to help YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN, child support, domestic violence, successful co-parenting, advantages to being a single mum, and the list goes on…

Single mothers carry a huge responsibility to their children. It is often very challenging as they have to overcome significant challenges, such as financial difficulties, social stigma, and the emotional and physical toll of raising a child alone. But despite these obstacles, many single mothers rise to the occasion, showing immense courage and determination. They learn to rely on their own resources, become more self-sufficient, and develop a deep sense of inner strength.

The experience allows mothers to demonstrate their strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It can be a challenging journey, but it is also one filled with moments of joy, triumph, and deep connection with one's children.

It can be overwhelming to balance the demands of work, parenting, and daily life, especially when doing it alone. But with the right tools and strategies, creating a supportive, loving, stable, and nurturing home for yourself and your children is possible.

Today I talk about factors that contribute to our children's emotional and physical well-being. Creating a stable and nurturing environment for your children requires effort and support, but the benefits are significant for both you and your children. It helps to build positive relationships, promote healthy emotional and physical development, and create a sense of security and stability that is essential for a child's well-being.

Juggling the responsibilities of work, parenting, and personal time can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, it's important to prioritize self-care and find ways to balance all aspects of life in order to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being.

Ultimately, maintaining a work-life balance as a single mother requires intentional effort and a willingness to prioritize self-care and personal time. By caring for yourself and setting clear boundaries, you can find the best balance for yourself and your family.

This week on the show, my special guest Jade shares Part 2 of her story.

**Please note this episode and topic may act as a trigger for some people, and this episode is unsuitable to listen to within earshot of children.**

Jade is a single mum who has been through a lot. She was in a relationship where her partner gaslit her, was unfaithful, and was emotionally abusive. For a long time, Jade struggled with the effects of her partner's behaviour. She questioned her own sanity and felt like she was losing her grip on reality. Today, she is a thriving woman who is now paying it forward. She is using her own experiences to help others who may be going through similar challenges, helping other women to recognise what is holding them back and reclaiming personal power.

Her story is a powerful reminder not to ignore the subtle signs of gaslighting and emotional abuse, and that no one deserves to be in an abusive relationship.

In this episode Jade and I talked about:

  •         The gaslighting she experienced.
  •         Finding out about her husband’s infidelity.
  •         Managing co-parenting with her ex-partner.
  •         The trauma she went through and knowing that the people around her knew about the whole ordeal.
  •         Steps she took to move on.
  •         Reconnecting with herself and being so much closer with the girls as a single mum.
  •         Her learnings from what she experienced.

Kids react to separation and divorce differently. They might feel like they've done something wrong to cause the separation, or they might feel anxious... They might withdraw, and they might display disruptive behaviours... These are normal reactions, and the best thing you can do, as parents is to let your kids know that it's okay to experience and share how they're feeling.

If you are separating from the other parent of your children, it's helpful to know what your kids might worry about so you can support them to the best ability. In this episode, I share ten things that kids might worry about when you separate.

I hope this episode helps you understand and listen to how they're feeling, and make sure they feel supported during the process.

The decision to separate usually results after weeks, months, or even years of contemplation. In this episode, I share ten things I highly recommend you do before separating or divorcing, if possible.

Getting a divorce or separation is a tremendous amount to handle legally, financially, socially, and emotionally. It’s something you take on when you’ve tried working it out and are certain there are no other viable options. So it’s crucial you do what you can to make this transition as easy as possible for yourself and your children.

This episode is relevant to you if you are trying to decide whether or not to get divorced or separate (you don't need to be married). This is one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever have to make. Too often, when making this decision, we rely on our feelings for answers, but doing this can confuse you and keep you in limbo, for months, or even years in many cases.

Today, I share some insights and reflection questions to help you determine if divorce or separation is the right move for you, or if you are able to take your relationship or marriage in a new direction. You don’t have to sit on the fence, stuck with indecision forever.

If you are going through this right now, please know that you are not alone. May you find the strength and confidence to move forward with concrete plans for yourself and your children.

In this episode, I discuss how you can be seen as credible during separation. It’s very important you appear as a credible person when you are dealing with lawyers, mediators, and even your ex. Credibility is important because it can help influence decisions and set reasonable expectations, and when you establish credibility, you establish you are thinking about what is important and best for the kids, and not letting your emotions get the better of you. So here, l give you tips on how you can establish your credibility. I hope what I discussed today will help you to remain objective, and to communicate with confidence and clarity.

In this episode, I talk to you about how you can prepare yourself emotionally for divorce or separation. In today’s society, divorce is a present reality for all couples that decide to marry. If you are ever faced with this decision or life change, it's important to mentally and emotionally prepare yourself for the difficulties that may lie ahead.

Divorce isn’t easy; it can be a traumatic experience for everyone involved as you deal with many complex issues. I hope this episode helps you see the silver lining. Instead of focusing on your current emotional state, know that your choices and preparation will allow you and your children to live in a home where you are no longer exposed to anger, an unhealthy relationship, and perhaps even domestic violence.

In this episode, I talk to you about the brain. I talk about how thoughts and habits are created in the brain and why it’s so important to be mindful of the way we think in order to create lasting change. How we think is very important. Ever heard of the phrase, “we become what we think about?” Thoughts are really important to people because they determine our well-being, how we act, how we behave, the choices we make, how we feel about ourselves, our relationships with others, and the quality of our lives.

I hope this episode helps you understand yourself and your thoughts better and to be mindful of them so you can create new habits.

In this episode, I talk about habits and how we can develop healthy habits that will support us in achieving our goals. Understanding how to build new habits is essential for making progress. And the first step is to start with your ‘why.’ Why do you want to reach your goal? As you set your goals for this new year, make a solid plan so they become a reality. You can then start creating new habits that align with your goals and that will help support you in reaching your goals.

I hope this episode helps you think of the new year as a fresh start. A new year is a unique opportunity. In this episode, I share a list of things to help you create new habits to achieve your goals this year. What you focus on becomes your reality. May you all live your life with intentions that will help you get closer to your goals.

Today I talk about developing new traditions when it comes to dealing with holiday seasons as a single parent. I hope the ideas I share with you create meaningful and new memorable Christmas traditions. Every major life event, whether joyful or sad, brings on a period of transition as we adjust to the “new normal,” and it turns out that celebrating Christmas as a single parent can be just as good, or often (and especially over time), even better!

I hope this episode is insightful for you and provides you with hope. Give yourself a pat on the back, there is no better gift you can give to yourself knowing that you are thriving after dealing with adversity.

In this ep, I chat about five different parent-child contact problems one might face. For example, in a recent podcast, I discussed a polarizing topic about parental alienation. Some believe in it and some don’t. Here, I spend a bit of time discussing this more to bring greater awareness and understanding of this topic.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • Parental alienation
  • Estrangement
  • Child empowerment
  • Gatekeeping
  • Parentification

These five parent-child contact problems are things to be mindful of, so you are able to maintain positive parent-child relationships.

This week on the show, I have Susan Shofer joining me.

Susan Shofer is a two-decade agency-licensed private investigator with over 1,100 testifying hours. Ten years ago, while working as a private investigator, Susan became a certified divorce coach. Her area of expertise is high-conflict divorce with a specialty in parental alienation. Susan is a member of the Parental Alienation Study Group, comprised of the most prominent mental health clinicians and legal professionals in the parental alienation space. She is also the Director of the Baltimore /Annapolis/ DC/ Northern Virginia NADP (National Association of Divorce Professionals).

Susan’s passion and mission are to help people navigate through their high-conflict divorce using specific strategies unique to their cases. Her specialty is teaching targeted parents how to approach parental alienation with a true understanding of why it happens, how it must be litigated in court, and ways to effectively communicate with alienated children.

In this episode we talked about:

  • What parental alienation is and why it’s the worst part of a high-conflict divorce.
  • What parental alienation is NOT.
  • How a parent may orchestrate parental alienation.
  • The impact of parental alienation on the targeted parent and the children.
  • How alienating parents are linked to often having personality disorders.
  • Why the alienator alienates their child from their other parent.
  • How parental alienation as a form of child abuse and domestic violence.
  • How parental alienation can affect children.
  • Susan's TedX talk experience and how it came about.
  • How parental alienation can happen pre, during, and post-divorce or separation.
  • How to move past parental alienation.
  • How parents who are alienated are often seen as the ones who may have done something wrong, rather than being victims.
  • And so much more!

This is a topic that is close to my heart. it is so important and so tragic. I hope it helps you if you are suffering from going through this.
